Gardener (native and non-native plants)

Crystal Cave is located in Spring Valley, a rural town located between River Falls Wisconsin and Menomonie Wisconsin and only 1 hour from Minneapolis / St. Paul Minnesota.

The Team Members of Crystal Cave are an group of dedicated, hardworking people hailing from all backgrounds.

Overall Responsibilities: To manage and improve our 7 acre prairie, native gardens, flower gardens, shrubs, and trees. Secondary duties include assisting with general maintenance of the cave and gift shop as necessary and interacting with our guests. Knowledge of native and non-native plants required. Previous gardening experience required.

Primary Duties:
To keep the grounds at Crystal Cave appealing to our guests.
1. Manage and plant new shrubs, trees, perennials, natives
2. Prune and trim trees and shrubs.
3. Manage proper watering of plants and lawn.
4. Deadhead flowers, weed, mulch, manage pollinator garden
5. Maintain/repair tools and equipment.
6. Operate vehicles and powered equipment including but not limited to; mowers, chain saws, weed whip, Toro Dingo.
7. Direct other staff members to assist in gardening tasks.

Secondary Duties:
1. Assist visitors in the gift shop, picnic area, etc.
2. Conduct an informative, educational and entertaining tour of Crystal Cave. (Training will be provided)
3. To assist in teaching and facilitating non-tour educational programs.
4. To work with visitors by broadening their general knowledge of caves and nature.
5. To serve as an ambassador for Crystal Cave.

1. Have prior work experience with skilled grounds keeping, be able to use a variety of tools/equipment.
2. Master Gardener training prefered but not required.
2. Must be able to work independently, make decisions and multi-task.
3. Enjoy working with the general public and school groups.
4. Must be in good physical condition to be able to descend and ascend several flights of stairs and ramps several times each day, stand for extended periods of time, lift a minimum of 30 pounds, use landscaping equipment.
5. Communicate effectively with large groups of people of various ages, educational, ethnic and economic backgrounds.
6. Comfortable underground with the dark and with bats.
7. Able to learn and understand basic geology, biology and conservation of caves.
8. Availablity including weekends and holidays
9. Must be able to pass criminal background checks.
